Ground Beef History

From Genghis Khan's army to 18th Century German "Hamburg Steaks" to "Hamburger" Charlie Nagreen of Seymour, WI with his 'meatballs between two slices of bread' for ease of carrying at the Outagamie County Fair, ground beef has a long history dating back thousands of years. Learn more about the unique history of ground beef here.

Naturally Nutrient-Rich

It’s easier than you think to build a healthful diet with beef. You may be surprised to hear that a 3-oz serving of lean beef (about the size of a deck of cards), has about 150 calories on average and is a good or excellent source of 10 essential nutrients like zinc, iron and B vitamins. Freezing Ground Beef

  • Place ground beef in a plastic bag and flatten it, increasing the surface area of the meat so it's easier to freeze and later defrost.
  • Once you flatten the ground beef, the bags become easy to stack.
  • Thawing meat in hot water may lead to food-borne illnesses. In the refrigerator, place raw or thawing beef in a container or on a dish that will prevent juices from dripping onto other foods.
  • Leftover cooked beef, when refrigerated, can be eaten within 3 to 4 days, but can last up to 3 months when frozen.

Cooking and Handling Safety

  • When handling raw meat, use separate cutting board and wash both the board and your hands after you are done. Use a disinfectant to clean all surfaces.
  • Never put cooked beef back on the same plate you used for raw meat and don't leave cooked food sitting out more than two hours.
  • Use a thermometer to prevent undercooking. To maintain your family's health, always cook ground beef to a minimum of 160 degrees.
